I grew up in Sacramento.
(Fairs Oaks, for the locals.)
(The city in Lady Bird, for the non-locals)
I lived on the north bank of the American River, near the wild fennel and blackberries brambles.
I learned from my mom that fennel tastes like black licorice, that you can chew on the stalk as a snack.
And I collected the blackberries several years in a row to replicate my favorite pie from Apple Hill.
At the time, I didn’t understand what those foods meant to me. Truthfully I didn’t care about food at all.
I was more focused on theatre, which I went to study in New York.
(Yes, just like Lady Bird)
